Duval anglers rally against federal fishing regulations

An overflow crowd of about 250 people packed Dick’s Wings on Beach Boulevard Tuesday night as the Recreational Fishing Alliance staged a rally to plot political strategies to opposing increasing regulations on saltwater fishing.

“I fish, I vote,” was a common slogan on T-shirts and bumper stickers being passed out at the event that featured several speakers who railed against increasing federal regulations that they say are decreasing anglers’ rights to waterways.

Often, the crowd cheered as one speaker after another criticized government regulations and promised politica...

Melbourne anglers nail giant yellowfins

How can Central Floridians catch yellowfin tuna when the offshore seas are six feet every weekend in the Atlantic?

Go fish in the Gulf of Mexico!

That’s what Melbourne outdoorsman Corey Nail did on Oct. 26. With his father, Ronnie Nail, and friend, Shayne Harris, the trio jumped into a pickup truck and made their way to Venice, LA.

After a 12-hour drive, they arrived only to learn their first of two days of fishing would be canceled due to weather.

Here's why they call it the Red Eye: At 5 p.m. Friday, anglers from throughout the area will meet at the Sebastian Inlet Marina to discuss a tournament in which their redfish will be weighed and prizes awarded the following afternoon.

Then they will head out to docks, banks and boats, and spend the night fishing.

As many as 50 anglers will compete for first- through sixth-place cash prizes as well as awards for redfish spots in the Sebastian Inlet Sportfishing Association's . . .

So Close, You Can Taste It

Start double-checking your dive gear now, the recreational spiny lobster season will soon be open in Florida waters. The special two-day sport season—that takes place on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday of July—opens July 27 and 28 this year. After the mini-season, the regular spiny lobster season runs August 6 through March 31.

To legally take spiny lobster, divers must possess a saltwater fishing license and a spiny lobster permit (stamp). A spiny lobster’s carapace must measure at least 3 inches to be boated. Have a measuring device handy so that lobster catches can b...
